Disney/Pixar is the first brand to advertise on Twitter’s new sponsored trending topics.
In April Twitter finally announced how it was going to repay all their VC funding, and the first part of a multi-stage commercial model, was promoted tweets, which enables brands to feature more prominently in relevant search results and in people’s news feeds .
The next phase is to be promoted trending topics, which adds an 11th trending topic which is marked with a big yellow box saying ‘promoted’ to differentiate it from the real trending topics.
The promoted trending topic will work in the same way as normal trending terms as users can click through to a search page which shows the conversations people are having about the term.
Disney/Pixar will be using the trending twitter to promote it’s 3D blockbuster Toy Story 3 which is out June 18 in the US.
