According to a new report from research firm Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments rose 43% annually to a record 60 million units during Q2 2010.
Research show that the smartphone market is continuing to grow and it now accounts for 19% of total worldwide handset volumes, up from 15% a year earlier. The research firm thinks the main reasons for this huge growth are healthy operator subsidies, vigorous competition between premium-tier vendors and a growing range of lower-cost models.
Looking at individual manufacturers there’s been some movement in the market but not much. Despite ongoing challenges, and a falling share price, Nokia managed to capture 40% market share, while RIM grew sales outside of it’s main US market and held its market share. Apple experienced a mixed quarter – confusingly the Strategy Analytics figures refer to Apple’s Q3 sales, – but as we saw earlier this week this hasn’t affected their revenues or their expected revenues for Q4.
Nokia
Nokia shipped a record 24.0 million smartphones worldwide in Q2 2010, rising 42% from 16.9 million units a year earlier. Despite ongoing challenges, Nokia managed to capture 40% global market share. Smartphones accounted for half of Nokia’s total device revenues worldwide in Q2 2010, up from an estimated 1% in 2000.
RIM
RIM shipped 11.2 million BlackBerry smartphones worldwide during Q2 2010, up 40% from 8.0 million units a year earlier. RIM’s 40% annual growth rate is relatively sluggish. RIM’s smartphone volumes were growing over 2 times faster than the industry average in Q2 2009, but the ratio has slipped to just 1 in the current quarter, due mostly to fierce competition from Apple and Android in its core North American territory. RIM’s global marketshare held steady at 19% in Q2 2010, a level it has maintained since peaking at 20% in Q1 2009.
APPLE
As we know Apple shipped just under 8.4 million iPhones worldwide in Q2 2010, rising 61% from 5.2 million units a year earlier. Apple again grew at an above-average rate, but its marketshare gains are slowing. Apple’s global smartphone marketshare has risen from 2% in Q2 2008 to 13% in Q2 2009 and 14% in Q2 2010.
