Mobile Twitter usage up by 250%

The number of people accessing Twitter from their mobile has grown by 250% since the start of this year, according to CEO Evan Williams.

The statistic was one just one of many revealed by Williams at a press conference for the new redesigned Twitter that will be rolling out over the next few weeks. Williams also once again reinforced the notion that “Mobile is critical for the future of Twitter.”

Williams said Twitter is now seeing 90 million plus tweets a day with about 25% of tweets containing links.
Twitter is also signing up on average 370,000 new people a day, of which 16% of those new users first access Twitter from a phone (that’s around 59,200 according to our calculator).

The new design for Twitter looks good, it’s now two columns and has added functionality, now when you click a Tweet, the details pane shows additional information related to the author or subject, and depending on the Tweet’s content, you may also see: @replies, other Tweets by that same user, a map of where a geotagged Tweet was sent from. You can also click on a username to see a mini profile with account information, including a bio and recent Tweets without navigating from the page. There’s also a new way to embedded photos and videos directly from Dailybooth, DeviantArt, Etsy, Flickr, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, Twitvid, USTREAM, Vimeo, Yfrog, and YouTube.

On the same day but on this side of the pond Twitter’s VP of business and corporate development Kevin Thau, said that 60% of Twitters traffic comes from outside the US, and it now has 145 million registered users, with 210 million people coming to the Twitter.com website every month.
