Twitter extending promoted tweets to timeline

Twitter has extended it’s Promoted Tweets – eg twitter adverts – to the timelines of HootSuite users, with a roll out to all users.

Twitter launched it’s Promoted Tweets in April, with a plan for gradually rolling them out starting with search on Twitter.com, then in search through our partners, and eventually in the user timeline. Starting yesterday, they’re beginning to test syndication of Promoted Tweets in user timelines. With and initial test using the HootSuite Twitter client.

Twitter won’t say when the full roll out will occur, Matt Graves on the Twitter blog said “Twitter is taking a deliberate and thoughtful approach to this test. We’re carefully looking at how Twitter users react to and engage with Promoted Tweets in the timeline. We want to display Promoted Tweets in a way that’s both useful and authentic to the Twitter experience.”

During the test period HootSuite users, will see Promoted Tweets in the timeline. But
not all HootSuite users will see Promoted Tweets and those who do may see different Promoted Tweets in different places in their timeline.

Twitter claim that they will display Promoted Tweets in the timeline “when they are relevant.” And if you’re thinking that this might go away then be warned according to Twitter “Since their introduction, users have engaged with Promoted Products on Twitter at rates that far exceed typical forms of online advertising.” It’s working in their eyes and it’s bringing in clicks so it’s going to be staying.
