iPad and Android top trends on Twitter for 2010

Micro-blogging giant Twitter has released its list of the top trending topics on the platform for the year with Apple’s iPad and Google’s Android fighting it out for top ten placings.

According to The Twitter blog , the Gulf oil spill, FIFA World Cup and the movie Inception were the top three overall trends for 2010, followed by Haiti Earthquake and Vuvuzela in the fourth and fifth positions.

In the Twitter trending topics at sixth and seventh place were, the Apple iPad followed closely by Google Android.

The most popular people on Twitter were Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is currently under arrest in London.  Other popular characters featured in the top ten included Harry Potter and Paul the score predicting Octopus.

The technology top ten matched the overall trends with Apple iPad in first place with Google Android in second place, followed by Apple’s mobile operating system. The big surprise- considering all the hype surrounding the launch and the build up to the launch – was that Windows Phone 7 didn’t get a look in, in the Technology top 10, better luck next year Microsoft.

Twitter also said that a staggering 25 billion Tweets were sent in 2010.
